Firm Also Holds Food Drive to Expand Its Community Impact

Kansas City, Mo.On a day that began with rain and ended with high humidity, all 181 MarksNelson employees deployed across Kansas City to volunteer at nonprofits. MarksNelson, one of the nation’s fastest growing accounting firms, closed its offices for a day so that its entire workforce - from the managing partner to summer interns -- could help move the community forward.

Volunteer Day is part of MarksNelson’s award-winning Marks of Kindness program, which centers around serving and connecting with our community. Through donating our time, experience and resources, we strive to make a positive impact and spread kindness. Staff members are involved in the process including nominating nonprofits and choosing the locations at which they wanted to volunteer. Many select projects that are personally meaningful to them.

This year 13 charities benefitted from the volunteers’ help. Among the top picks were playing games with children at organizations which serve low-income neighborhoods; sorting donations and cleaning at area homeless shelters; and landscaping a facility which serves families. Accountants, business advisors, technology professionals and the operations team climbed ladders, dug with shovels, painted, planted, cut down trees and worked under the hot sun. Others sorted, filed, cleaned and interacted with those helped by the charitable organizations.

This year’s Volunteer Day also included a food-drive for a local food pantry to help combat the “summer nutrition gap”. With schools on summer break, many children don’t have access to free and reduced meals at school. MarksNelson employees brought in 75 pounds of food as well as donated financially through our Marks of Kindness Foundation.

Employees say that, in addition to giving back to the community, they enjoy teaming up with coworkers from different departments and spend time with each other.

Furthering the interaction, the day began with a group photo of all MarksNelson employees and ended with a get-together at an area party hall.
